Welcome to the 1st Holt Scout Group

Information About Our Group

If you’re a parent who’d like to know more about what your child would do as a member of the Scout Association, or someone wanting to know more about what we do at the 1st Holt Scout Group, then you’re in the right place. Welcome.

Scouting is all about preparing young people with #SkillsForLife

It is all about encouraging our young people to do more, learn more and be more. Each week, in the UK, Scouters give over 460,000 young people the opportunity to enjoy fun and adventure while developing the skills they need to succeed, now and in the future. We're talking about teamwork, leadership and resilience - skills that have helped Scouts become everything from Teachers and Social Workers to Astronauts and Olympians.

We believe in bringing people together. We celebrate diversity and stand against intolerance, always. We're a worldwide movement, creating stronger communities and inspiring positive futures.

The 1st Holt Scout Group is located just a stones throw from the centre of our beautiful Georgian town and, with our Headquarters building on the Cley Road, we are the town's only Scout Group. We are one of the oldest Scout Groups, having been formed in 1912; just five years after our founder, Lord Baden Powell (known to everyone as BP) held his experimental camp on Brownsea Island in 1907.  We are in the North East Norfolk Scout District, which is part of the Norfolk County Scout Council and is within the East of England Region.

We are very proud of our history so, If you spot any errors in the Time Line of the Group please use the contact form to let us know so we can correct them. If you have any memories or pictures from the Group's past, then again please get in touch via the contact form so that we can add them.

To see beyond this page, you can click on the visible links, but to go there you have to be a member of the 1st Holt Scout Council, i.e. a parent of a youth member, a Leader, Helper or member of our Group Executive Committee. The contact form however, will enable you to get in touch if you wish to speak with any member of the group.

We are an enthusiastic group that has a lively Beaver Colony for boys and girls from the ages of 6 to 8yrs of age. Our exciting Cub Pack is for those aged from 8 to 10 yrs and the Scout Troop is for 10 to 14 year olds seeking adventure as they join in the Scouting Game. Once they reach 14yrs Scouts can either go on to join the local Explorer Scout Unit or they can join the District 'Young Leader Unit' and remain as part of our Young Leader Team. Which ever route they choose they remain an Explorer Scout until they are 18, after which there is the option to become members of the Scout Network, retaining their links with The Group and the wider Movement, until the age of 25.

Every section aims to provide the best scouting possible to its members and there is a highly dedicated team of leaders and helpers working very hard to make sure that this happens.

If your child is interested in joining scouting, or you’re keen for them to get involved, take a look at some of the questions we are most frequently asked by parents and carers.

How can my child benefit from joining Scouts?

In an independent survey of over 2,000 parents of Scouts, nine out of ten parents said Scouting is worthwhile and nine in ten said their children find Scouting enjoyable.

As your child progresses through Scouts you should be able to see signs of the impact their Scouting adventure has on them.

Parents tell us Scouting gives their children more confidence, responsibility and a broader set of friends. Scouting can help develop your child’s social skills and encourage self-sufficiency, and gives them access to activities and opportunities that may have been otherwise unavailable to them. A huge number of parents agreed that since their child joined Scouting family life was easier and they were ‘nicer children to live with’.

Adult Volunteers

Scouting in Holt is made possible by our amazing team of adult volunteers, ranging from Beaver Scout, Cub Scout and Scout Section Leaders to  Occasional Helpers and Helping Parents on our Parents Rota. We also have non uniformed adults as members of our Group Executive Committee, who help administer the Group; leaving our uniformed adults free to concentrate on the scouting skills and activities.

To support adults in Scouting, the Association provides a comprehensive programme of training to build on existing skills and knowledge and to help develop new competencies. Some elements of training can count towards externally recognised qualifications, and within the movement there are also awards to recognise dedication to training and outstanding service. Our Adult Volunteers have the responsibility of running their section and allowing the young people to make the most out of their Scouting adventure, at the same time having an adventure themselves.

Being an Adult Volunteer also offers the chance to build on personal skills, such as teamwork, confidence and leadership. A study found that over 90% of the volunteers in the Scouting movement believe that the skills and experiences they have gained through Scouting have been of relevance to their working or personal lives.

Volunteering can be a brilliant way to boost your mental wellbeing. It’s a great feeling knowing you’re helping young people gain skills for life, and you might even learn a lot about yourself along the way.

Scouts can make you feel good in other ways too. It can give you the opportunity to :

  • Make friends and meet people
  • Try new things and challenge yourself
  • Get outdoors and get stuck in
  • Positively impact your community
  • Create vital opportunities for young people
  • Make memories that'll last a lifetime

If you can only occasionally help, that’s OK. Whether you’d like to be an activity planner, tea-maker or craft creator, we appreciate any time you can spare.

Here at the 1st Holt, we will always welcome adults who want to help us in our mission of providing the best Scouting possible to our members. No Section can ever have too many people offering to help at meetings and events. To find out more on how to be an adult volunteer follow this link to the Volunteer Enquiry Form, or if you would like try helping out or just want more information on how you can get involved, then visit the contact us page.

Scout Active Support

If you do not wish to get involved at a Group Level but would still like to return to Scouting in an adult capacity. There is now an adult Section for you to get involved with It is known as the Scout Active Support Unit (*the link will take you to the Norfolk Scout's ASU page). here you will be able to offer what time you may have to support Scouting at whatever level you are able to offer.

Inclusive Scouting

The policy of The Scout Association is to include young people with additional needs and disabilities in mainstream Scouting wherever possible. Where it is not possible or appropriate, there is a network of specialist Scout Groups for young people who would otherwise not be able to participate and enjoy Scouting. For example, there are a number of Scout Groups operating in hospitals and hospices providing Scouting for young people with life limiting conditions.
