About the Scout Troop

Scouts were the first, and therefore they are the oldest, Section of the movement, but now they are the third and final Section in the Scout Group. The Scout section follows on from the Cub Pack (8-10½ year olds) and Scouts will move onto the Explorer Scout section at the age of 14.

Scouts are encouraged to take part in a wide range of activities as part of their programme. “Participation” rather than meeting set standards is the key approach and for the Scout who wants to be recognised for his or her achievements there are a number of Challenge Awards and Activity Badges. Scouts take part in a balanced programme that helps them to find out about the world in which they live, encourages them to know their own abilities and the importance of keeping fit and helps develop their creative talents. It also provides opportunities to explore their own values and personal attitudes.

From that first experimental camp for 20 boys on Brownsea Island in 1907, the movement now has now grown to an estimated 28 million members worldwide, and in the UK alone there are over 500,000 boys and girls involved in scouting. Interesting Fact - Of the 24 men to travel to the moon on the Apollo 8 and Apollo 10 through 17 missions, 20 were scouts, including 11 of the 12 moonwalkers, and all three members of the crew of Apollo 13

An increase in adult volunteers means that more and more young people would be able to take part in their own big adventure.
